Civil Project - 2000m3 Concrete Water Tank

Fusco Constructions was contracted by SA Water to construct a new 2000m3 tank in Burra, 2 hours north of Adelaide. The new tank stood at 10m in height and 16m in diameter, adjacent a smaller tank slated for demolition.

The task meant strict adherence to SA Water guidelines whilst complying with the Standards TS1b, TG106, and most importantly TS68 – the technical standard for reinforced concrete construction for liquid retaining structures – which specifies a maximum discharge time of 1.5 hours from the loading of concrete onto the truck.

With the nearest concrete plant some 40 minutes away in Clare, the flawless execution of the concrete pour was of utmost importance to maintain uninterrupted operation of the existing tank, which supplied the entire town and stood just 10m away, during construction.

Local Impact:

The towering new tank effectively resolved the town’s issues of low water pressure, delivering significantly higher pressure while ensuring uninterrupted operations and a plentiful, reliable water supply.

Civil Project - Kingston Hospital Fire Service Upgrade

Fusco was contracted by DPTI to install and upgrade its fire service, running with 80% documentation and finishing the fire design to suit the specification, all during Kingston Hospital’s crucial operations during COVID-19.

The detailed project involved laying 350lm of HDPE fire pipe – including 60m of direct boring under a SAPN HV cable – the construction of a tank slab, 2 water tanks, 2 pumps, a new booster arrangement at the street, upgrading internal sprinkler and electrical fire systems, plus the install and commission of new sprinkler pipework, mimic panels, and detectors.

Our Solution:

Ensuring the utmost safety, Fusco planned the excavations at different locations each day, only digging what could be promptly backfilled, leaving no open trenches overnight, and collaborating closely with the hospital to coordinate excavations across driveways, so as not to obscure delivery locations or emergency vehicle access.

Local impact:

Despite construction occurring during the COVID period and with specific protocols issued for working around high-risk elderly patients, the project timeline was met. Additionally, the project resulted in a much safer – and now compliant – hospital with new fire systems in place.

Civil Project - Ernabella Tank Replacement APY

SA Water contracted Fusco Constructions to replace the existing water tank, pour new footings, construct, and connect the new tank to the existing water infrastructure, all some 1400kms north-west of Adelaide.

Due to its remote location, our workforce spent 2 weeks at a time on site, with all food, accommodation – and the extra complexity of transporting materials – coordinated by Fusco Constructions.

Local impact:

The timeline was met, and the project effectively re-secured the water supply for the entire community after the existing water tank was damaged by vandals.

Civil Project - Umuwa Water Supply Upgrade APY

This involved the water upgrade to the township of Umuwa in the APY Lands, some 1200kms north-west of Adelaide and 460kms south-west of Alice Springs. Fusco was contracted to lay 3km of 100mm pipe, construct 2 water tanks, and 2 associated tank and water supply compounds.

Naturally, logistical planning was crucial given the extremely demanding, remote location.

Our Solution:

Fusco provided full workforce support including accommodation, messing, and recreational facilities. We also procured and mobilised materials into this remote location and supported its personal, plant and machinery.

Local Impact:

Despite a strict due date by SA Water, we completed the project on time, on budget, and to the client’s satisfaction.

Civil Project - Palmer Water Tank Upgrade

SA Water has a number of large water storage tanks serving the local Palmer community, with some tanks showing a degradation of the concrete roof support columns. These columns needed to be replaced.

The project involved the removal of the top 1600mm of the 20 concrete columns inside Palmer Tank 3. It also involved the treatment, repair and/or replacement of the exposed reinforcement and reinstatement of the removed columns.

The Challenges:

Draining water from the tank was the first challenge encountered along with the removal and appropriate disposal of the associated sludge and other contaminants.

As the large concrete columns were supporting the roof, not all columns could be refurbished at one time, meaning when one was cut, it had to be re-steeled and re-poured very quickly. The biggest challenge, however, was meeting the very tight timelines imposed by SA Water.

Fusco was pleased to complete the project on time and within budget.

Civil Project - Fulton Hogan Tank Upgrade

Contracted by Fulton Hogan to complete the tank rehabilitation works at the SA Water Heathfield and Eudunda sites, the task involved new roof sheeting and roof structures to the tanks.

The two tanks were taken offline to allow scissor lifts and scaffolding to be dropped in to complete the works. We then upgraded the stormwater drainage systems and access tracks across both sites.

Our Solution:

Facing tight deadlines, speed was essential during the tanks’ offline period. Safety remained paramount, particularly working at height inside the tanks. To guarantee the competency of all workers, Fusco diligently ensured their proficiency with EWP (Elevated Work Platforms) while execution of the works adhered strictly to the rigorous standards set by Fulton Hogan and SA Water.

Local Impact:

Our involvement increased the lifespan of the tanks while maintaining abundant water supply for the community.

Civil Project - Berri Stormwater Upgrade

The design and construct project focused on upgrading the SA Water Berri depot system, addressing the significant damage caused to council roadways and infrastructure due to heavy rainfall in recent years. The worst affected area was the Grit Blast Shed, one corner dropping some 250mm.

The Solution:

Fusco Constructions employed engineers to rectify, redesign the entire stormwater system, and implement new detention tanks and pollutant filters. We worked closely with on-site supervisors from SA Water to execute the task while maintaining depot access and usual operations, safely.

This also meant completing the task in inclement weather and implementing a series of short-term barricades to protect the depot whilst the stormwater system upgrade occurred.

The Impact:

We worked swiftly, resolving the flooding issues and completing the project on time while keeping the depot in full operation.

Civil Project - MAPL, MBOPL and MWPL Pump Station Access Track Upgrades

This project involved the upgrade of a series of sites along the Mannum Adelaide Pipeline (MAPL), Morgan Whyalla Pipeline (MWPL), and Murray Bridge Onkaparinga Pipeline (MBOPL.)

The Solution:

Works to each involved the installation of new spoon drains, remediation work to gutters and downpipes, and upgrades to on-site stormwater systems and access tracks.

The project required working at height to clean the pump station roof, which fell within the exclusion zone of high voltage power lines and their associated transformer. Fusco prioritized the safety of all contractors involved, ensuring they possessed the necessary skills and knowledge in this domain. Scaffolding was erected in accordance with SA Water’s safety requirements.

The Impact:

Completing the project on time, we successfully increased the site safety for SA Water operational staff and the longevity of all sites.

Civil Project - SA Water Bolivar

Working once again with SA Water, Fusco Constructions was assigned the task of designing and building a new 6-bay shed to replace one now in the path of the new Northern Connector roadway, and the relocation of a transportable house.

Fusco facilitated communications between SA Water and the third party client to ensure all parties approved of the final design consisting of six 6m bays with six 6m high and wide sliding doors; the bays at either end dedicated to workshops, a partition wall divided the four middle bays that were dedicated to farm equipment storage.

We liaised with SA Power to obtain a new meter, with 15 amp power provided to both workshop bays. Floodlights were installed for the outside hardstand area, consisting of ballast and rubble layers.

The Impact:

Our adherence to this very tight timeline meant no delays were encountered for the impending construction of the Northern Connector roadway.

Civil Project - Normanville Yankalilla Temporary Water Tanks

Providing extra water security through summer, Fusco Constructions were tasked to supply fourteen temporary storage tanks and associated infrastructure to the Normanville and Yankalilla regions, approximately 75kms south of Adelaide.

This meant preparing and levelling the tank sites, procurement of required pipework and infrastructure, the transportation of all tanks from the Happy Valley depot to the two sites, the installation of temporary above ground pipework, and finally, disconnection of the tanks when required.

The Impact:

The works – carried out during the busy Christmas break – effectively safeguarded the town’s water supply at risk of running out due to higher than normal consumption and COVID-19 travel restrictions.

Civil Project - Nyapari, Kanpi & Murputja Water Infrastructure Upgrade

Utilising a high contingent of local indigenous workers and businesses, the $8M project involved constructing a significant water treatment compound including water tanks, elevated to 15m, the installation of a desalination plant, six UV treatment buildings, a solar battery system, and kilometres of underground pipework that would enter and connect each house within the three remote communities.

Our Solution:

Leveraging off previous experience working in the APY Lands, Fusco Constructions developed a highly successful local Anangu employment model, and by its utilization during the project, achieved a 30% local employment rate.

Local Impact:

The community recognized the employment model’s success as best practice, setting a benchmark that led to the further development of Aboriginal workforce skills within the remote township.
